In the given reaction scheme, P is a phenyl alkyl ether, Q  is an aromatic compound; R and S are the major products.

The correct statement about S is

  1. A It primarily inhibits noradrenaline degrading enzymes
  2. B It inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandin
  3. C It is a narcotic drug
  4. D It is ortho-acetylbenzoic acid
Verified Solution

Answer & Solution

Correct Answer

(B) It inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandin

Step-by-step Solution

Detailed explanation

The starting material P can be a phenol ether. When it reacts with hydrogen iodide, it gives phenol and alkyl iodide. The phenol formed undergo Kolbe's reaction with carbon dioxide in the presence of sodium hydroxide converts to salicylic acid. The salicylic acid gives Asprin on reaction with acetic anhydride. Aspirin belong to the class of non-narcotic analgesics.  It inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandin. Antidepressant drugs are the drugs inhibit the enzymes which catalyse the degradation of noradrenaline.
