A block \((B)\) is attached to two unstretched \(S_1\) and \(S_2\) with spring constants \(k\) and \(4 k\), respectively (see figure I). The other ends are attached to identical supports \(M_1\) and \(M_2\) not attached to the walls. The springs and supports have negligible mass. There is no friction anywhere. The block \(B\) is displaced towards wall 1 by a small distance \(x\) (figure II) and released. The block returns and moves a maximum distance \(y\) towards wall 2 . Displacements \(x\) and \(y\) are measured with respect to the equilibrium position of the block \(B\). The ratio \(\frac{y}{-1}\) is

- A 4
- B 2
- C \(\frac{1}{2}\)
- D \(\frac{1}{4}\)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(C) \(\frac{1}{2}\)
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
From energy conservation,
\(
\begin{aligned}
\frac{1}{2} k x^2 & =\frac{1}{2}(4 k) y^2 \\
\frac{y}{x} & =\frac{1}{2}
\end{aligned}
\)
\(\therefore\) correct option is (c).

- Paragraph:
A frame of reference that is accelerated with respect to an inertial frame of reference is called a non-inertial frame of reference. A coordinate system fixed on a circular disc rotating about a fixed axis with a constant angular velocity \(\omega\) is an example of a non-inertial frame of reference.
The relationship between the force \(\vec{F}_{\text {rot }}\) experienced by a particle of mass \(m\) moving on the rotating disc and the force \(\vec{F}_{\text {in }}\) experienced by the particle in an inertial frame of reference is
\(\vec{F}_{\mathrm{rot}}=\vec{F}_{\mathrm{in}}+2 m\left(\vec{v}_{\mathrm{rot}} \times \vec{\omega}\right)+m(\vec{\omega} \times \vec{r}) \times \vec{\omega}\),
where \(\vec{v}_{\text {rot }}\) is the velocity of the particle in the rotating frame of reference and \(\vec{r}\) is the position vector of the particle with respect to the centre of the disc.
Now consider a smooth slot along a diameter of a disc of radius \(R\) rotating counter-clockwise with a constant angular speed \(\omega\) about its vertical axis through its center. We assign a coordinate system with the origin at the center of the disc, the \(x\)-axis along the slot, the \(y\)-axis perpendicular to the slot and the \(z\)-axis along the rotation axis \((\vec{\omega}=\omega \hat{k}) .\) A small block of mass \(m\) is gently placed in the slot at \(\vec{r}=(R / 2) \hat{i}\) at \(t=0\) and is constrained to move only along the slot.

JEE Advanced 2021 Medium - Column I shows four situations of standard Young's double slit arrangement with the screen placed far away from the slits \(S_1\) and \(S_2\). In each of these cases \(S_1 P_0=S_2 P_0\), \(S_1 P_1-S_2 P_1=\frac{\lambda}{4}\) and \(S_1 P_2-S_2 P_2=\frac{\lambda}{3}\), where \(\lambda\) is the wavelength of the light used. In the cases \(\mathrm{B}, \mathrm{C}\) and \(\mathrm{D}\), a transparent sheet of refractive index \(\mu\) and thickness \(t\) is pasted on slit \(S_2\). The thickness of the sheets are different in different cases. The phase difference between the light waves reaching a point \(P\) on the screen from the two slits is denoted by \(\delta(P)\) and the intensity by \(I(P)\). Match each situation given in Column-I with the statement(s) in Column-II valid for that situation.
