A piece of wire is bent in the shape of a parabola \(y=k x^2\) (y-axis vertical) with a bead of mass \(m\) on it. The bead can slide on the wire without friction. It stays at the lowest point of the parabola when the wire is at rest. The wire is now accelerated parallel to the \(x\)-axis with the constant acceleration \(a\). The distance of the new equilibrium position of the bead, where the bead can stays at rest with respect to the wire, from the \(y\)-axis is
- A \(\frac{a}{g k}\)
- B \(\frac{a}{2 g k}\)
- C \(\frac{2 a}{g k}\)
- D \(\frac{a}{4 g k}\)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(B) \(\frac{a}{2 g k}\)
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
\(N \sin \theta=m g\)
\(
\begin{aligned}
N \cos \theta & =m a \\
\tan \theta & =\frac{g}{a} \\
\cot \theta & =\frac{a}{g}=\tan \left(90^{\circ}-\theta\right)=\frac{d y}{d x}=2 k x
\end{aligned}
\)

\(\therefore \quad x=\frac{a}{2 k g}\)

The key feature of Bohr's theory of spectrum of hydrogen atom is the quantization of angular momentum when an electron is revolving around a proton. We will extend this to a general rotational motion to find quantized rotational energy of a diatomic molecule assuming it to be rigid. The rule to be applied is Bohr's quantization condition.
