Paragraph:
The figure shows a surface \(X Y\) separating two transparent media, medium-1 and medium-2. The lines \(a b\) and \(c d\) represent wavefronts of a light wave travelling in medium-1 and incident on \(X Y\). The lines ef and \(g h\) represent wavefronts of the light wave in medium-2 after refraction.
Question:
Speed of light is
- A the same in medium-1 and medium-2
- B larger in medium-1 than in medium-2
- C larger in medium-2 than in medium-1
- D different at \(b\) and \(d\)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(B) larger in medium-1 than in medium-2
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
In medium-2 wavefront bends away from the normal after refraction. Therefore, ray of light which is perpendicular to wavefront bends towards the normal in medium-2 during refraction. So, medium-2 is denser or its speed in medium-1 is more. Hence, option (b) is correct.

JEE Advanced 2017 Hard - Paragraph :
A dense collection of equal number of electrons and positive ions is called neutral plasma. Certain solids containing fixed positive ions surrounded by free electrons can be treated as neutral plasma. Let \(N\) be the number density of free electrons, each of mass \(m\). When the electrons are subjected to an electric field, they are displaced relatively away from the heavy positive ions.If the electric field becomes zero, the electrons being to oscillate about the positive ions with a natural angular frequency \(\omega_p\), which is called the plasma frequency. To sustain the oscillations, a time varying electric field needs to be applied that has an angular frequency \(\omega\), where a part of the energy is absorbed and a part of it is reflected. As \(\omega\) approaches \(\omega_p\), all the free electrons are set to resonance together and all the energy is reflected. This is the explanation of high reflectivity of metals.
Question :
Taking the electronic charge as \(e\) and the permittivity as \(\varepsilon_0\), use dimensional analysis to determine the correct expression for \(\omega_p\).JEE Advanced 2011 Hard
