In the single slit experiment of diffraction, the aperture of the slit is 2 mm. If a monochromatic light of wavelength 600 nm is incident normally on the slit, the distance between \( 2^{\text{nd}} \) order minima and the \( 4^{\text{th}} \) order maxima on the screen placed 2 m away from the slit will be:
- A 0.775 mm
- B 1 mm
- C 3 mm
- D 1.5 mm
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(D) 1.5 mm
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
\(y_{\text{min, 2}} = \frac{2 \lambda D}{a}\) \(y_{\text{min, 2}} = \frac{2 \cdot (600 \times 10^{-9} \, \text{m}) \cdot (2 \, \text{m})}{2 \times 10^{-3} \, \text{m}} = 1.2 \times 10^{-3} \, \text{m} = 1.2 \, \text{mm}\)…

- Answer the question on the basis of passage given below :
There are some deposits of nitrates and phosphates in the earth’s crust. Nitrates are more soluble in water. Nitrates are difficult to reduce under laboratory conditions, but microbes do it easily. Ammonia forms a large number of complexes with transition metals. Hybridisation easily explains the ease of sigma donation capability of NH₃ and PH₃. Phosphine is an inflammable gas, prepared from white phosphorus.
Which of the following is the correct statement?
A. Between NH₃ and PH₃, NH₃ is a better electron donor because the lone pair of electrons occupy spherical 's' orbital and is less directional.
B. Between NH₃ and PH₃, NH₃ is a better electron donor because the lone pair of electrons occupies sp³ orbital and is more directional.
C. Between NH₃ & PH₃, PH₃ is a better electron donor because the lone pair of electrons occupies sp² orbital and is more directional.
D. Between NH₃ & PH₃, PH₃ is a better electron donor because the lone pair of electrons occupies 's' orbital and is less directional.

Molar conductivity \(\left( \Lambda _m\right)\) of a solution at a given concentration (c) is the conductance of volume, V of solution, containing one mole of electrolyte kept between the two electrodes with area of cross-section A and at a distance of unit length. It increases with the decrease in concentration and when the concentration approaches zero, the molar conductivity is called limiting molar conductivity \(\Lambda_m^0\). For a strong electrolyte, \(\left( \Lambda _m\right)\) increases linearly with dilution and is given by \(\Lambda_m=\Lambda_m^0-A c^{1 / 2}\).The value of the constant A for a given solvent depends on the type of electrolyte along with temperature. According to Kohlrausch law, the value of \(\Lambda_m^0\) for an electrolyte is \(\Lambda_m^0=\nu_{+} \lambda_{+}^0+\nu_{-} \lambda_{-}^0\), where \(\nu_{+}\)and \(\nu_{-}\) where v+ and v- are the number of cations and anions, respectively, per molecule of the electrolyte and \(\lambda_{+}^0\) and \(\lambda_{-}^0\) are limiting molar conductivities of cation and anion, respectively. Kohlrausch law
finds many applications, like determining the solubility of a sparingly soluble salt, determining the degree of dissociation \(\left(\Lambda_m / \Lambda_m^0\right)\), and the dissociation constant of a weak electrolyte.

- DNA recombinant technology involves the use of restriction endonucleases. After having cloned the gene of interest and having optimised the conditions to induce the expression of the target protein, one has to consider producing it on a large scale. The cells harbouring cloned genes of interest may be grown on a small scale in the laboratory. In order to link the alien DNA, the vector needs to have very few, preferably single, recognition sites for the commonly used restriction enzymes. Presence of more than one recognition sites within the vector will generate several fragments, which will complicate the gene cloning. In Biolistics or gene gun method cells are bombarded with high velocity micro particles of gold or tungsten coated with DNA. The ligation of alien DNA is carried out at a restriction site present in one of the two antibiotic resistance genes. For example, you can ligate a foreign DNA at the BamH I site of tetracycline resistance gene in the vector pBR322. Since the DNA is enclosed within the membranes, we have to break the cell open to release DNA along with other macromolecules such as RNA, proteins, polysaccharides and also lipids. The RNA can be removed by treatment with ribonuclease whereas proteins can be removed by treatment with protease. Other molecules can be removed by appropriate treatments and purified DNA ultimately precipitates out after the addition of chilled ethanol.
