An electric dipole of dipole moment \(5 \times 10^{-6} \mathrm{Cm}\) is placed in a uniform electric field of \(10^{-2} \mathrm{~N} / \mathrm{C}\) making an angle of \(30^{\circ}\) with the direction of the field. The torque exerted by the electric field on the dipole is:
- A \(1 \times 10^{-8} \mathrm{~N} \mathrm{~m}\)
- B \(1.5 \times 10^{-8} \mathrm{~N} \mathrm{~m}\)
- C \(2.5 \times 10^{-8} \mathrm{~N} \mathrm{~m}\)
- D \(5 \times 10^{-8} \mathrm{Nm}\)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(C) \(2.5 \times 10^{-8} \mathrm{~N} \mathrm{~m}\)
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
\(\tau = pE \sin\theta\) \(\tau = (5 \times 10^{-6} \mathrm{Cm})(10^{-2} \mathrm{~N/C})\sin(30^{\circ})\) \(\tau = (5 \times 10^{-8})(0.5) \mathrm{~N} \mathrm{~m}\) \(\tau = 2.5 \times 10^{-8} \mathrm{~N} \mathrm{~m}\)

The diversity of rice in India is one of the richest in the world. Basmati rice is distinct for its unique aroma and flavour and 27 documented varieties of Basmati are grown in India. There is reference to Basmati in ancient texts, folklore and poetry, as it has been grown for centuries. Several attempts have also been made to patent uses, products and processes based on Indian traditional herbal medicine, e.g. turmeric, neem. There has been growing realisation of the injustice, inadequate compensation and benefit sharing between developed and developing countries. The Indian Parliament has recently cleared a Bill that takes such issues into consideration, including patent terms emergency provisions and research and development initiative.

An overwhelming majority (99 per cent) of animals and nearly all plants cannot maintain a constant internal environment. Their body temperature changes with the ambient temperature. In aquatic animals, the osmotic concentration of the body fluids change with that of the ambient air and water osmotic concentration. These animals and plants are simply conformers. Considering the benefits of a constant internal environment to the organism, we must ask why these conformers had not evolved to become regulators. Recall the human analogy we used above; much as they like, how many people can really afford an air conditioner? Many simply 'sweat it out' and resign themselves to suboptimal performance in hot summer months. Very small animals are rarely found in polar regions. During the course of evolution, the costs and benefits of maintainin a constant internal environment are taken into consideration. Some species have evolved the ability to regulate, but only over a limited range of environmental conditions, beyond which they simply conform.
If the stressful external conditions are localised or remain only for a short duration, the organism has five other alternatives for survival.
