Which one of the following is the weakest oxidizing agent?
- A F
- B \(H _2\)
- C \(Li ^{+}\)
- D \(K ^{+}\)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(C) \(Li ^{+}\)
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
\(E^\circ\) values for reduction: \(F_2 = +2.87 \text{ V}\), \(H^+ = 0.00 \text{ V}\), \(K^+ = -2.92 \text{ V}\), \(Li^+ = -3.05 \text{ V}\). Weakest oxidizing agent has the most negative \(E^\circ\). Result: \(Li^+\)

The transition metals and their compounds are known for their catalytic activity. This activity is ascribed to their ability to adopt multiple oxidation states and to form complexes. Vanadium(V) oxide (in Contact Process), finely divided iron, and nickel (in Catalytic Hydrogenation) are some of the examples. Catalysts at a solid surface involve the formation of bonds between reactant molecules and atoms of the surface of the catalyst (first row transition metals utilise 3d and 4s electrons for bonding). This has the effect of increasing the concentration of the reactants at the catalyst surface and also weakening of the bonds in the reacting molecules (the activation energy is lowering). Also because the transition metal ions can change their oxidation states, they become more effective as catalysts. Reaction between iodide and persulphate ions takes place as follows: \(2I^- + S_2O_8^{2-} \rightarrow I_2 + 2SO_4^{2-}\)

Carboxylic acids are the earliest organic compounds isolated from nature. These are also known as organic acids but are weaker acids as compared to mineral acids. However, they are more acidic than alcohols and phenols because of greater resonance stabilization of the parent acid and its conjugate base. The acidic strength is determined by the \(K _a\), which is called the acidity constant. The greater the value of \(K _a\), the greater the tendency of the acid to ionize and hence the stronger the acid. The acidic strength of the saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid depends upon the inductive effect and its position with respect to - COOH groups. Electron -donating substituents tend to decrease whereas electron -withdrawing substituents tend to increase the acidic strength. The acidic strength of the aromatic carboxylic acid, on the other hand depends upon both the inductive effect and the resonance effect of the substituents.

The crystal field theory (CFT) is an electrostatic model which considers the metal-ligand bond to be ionic arising purely from electrostatic interactions between the metal ion and the ligand. Ligands are treated as point charges in case of anions or dipoles in case of neutral molecules. The five d orbitals in an isolated gaseous metal atom/ion have same energy, i.e., they are degenerate. This degeneracy is maintained if a spherically symmetrical field of negative charges surrounds the metal atom/ion. However, when this negative field is due to ligands (either anions or the negative ends of dipolar molecules like NH3 and H2O) in a complex, it becomes asymmetrical and the degeneracy of the d orbitals is lifted. It results in splitting of the d orbitals. The pattern of splitting depends upon the nature of the crystal field.
