Which one of the following is a low spin complex?
- A \(\left[ Co \left( NH _3\right)_6\right]^{3+}\)
- B \(\left[ Fe \left( H _2 O \right)_6\right]^{2+}\)
- C \(\left[ CoF _6\right]^{3-}\)
- D \(\left[ Mn \left( H _2 O \right)_6\right]^{2+}\)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(A) \(\left[ Co \left( NH _3\right)_6\right]^{3+}\)
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
For \( \left[ Co \left( NH _3\right)_6\right]^{3+} \): \( Co^{3+} \) is \( d^6 \). \( NH_3 \) is a strong field ligand. A \( d^6 \) complex with strong field ligands is low spin.

Alcohols are versatile compounds as they can act as both nucleophile and electrophile. They undergo reactions based on cleavage of O-H and C-O bonds. The cleavage of O-H bond reflects the acidic character of alcohols. However they are weaker acids than water, phenol and carboxylic acids. Alkoxide ion formed by loss of proton from the OH group of alcohols reacts with water to form the corresponding conjugate acid - base pair. They act as Bronsted base due to presence of unshared electron pairs on oxygen. Both alcohols and phenol react with carboxylic acids, acid chlorides and anhydrides to form esters. The introduction of acetyl group in alcohols or phenol is known as acetylation. Alcohols react with hydrogen halides to form alkyl halides which form the basis of Lucas test. They also undergo acid catalyzed dehydration to form alkenes. Alcohols can be easily oxidized with variety of oxidizing agents. The nature of the product depends on the type of oxidizing agent and the nature of alcohol.

Ethers with the general formula \(C _n H _{2 n+2} O\) and functional group C-O-C may be divided as symmetrical and unsymmetrical.
Lower symmetrical ether may be obtained by the dehydration of alcohols at low temperatures in the presence of protic acids,
such as \(H _2 SO _4\) and \(H _3 PO _4\) whereas at high temperature intramolecular dehydration takes place.
Formation of ether from primary alcohols is also accompanied by the formation of small amount of alkenes.
Due to the steric hinderance, secondary and tertiary alcohols undergo elimination reaction rather than substitution reaction yielding alkene as major product. Ethers can also be obtained by heating alkyl halides with sodium or potassium alkoxides.
Substituted Ethers (secondary & tertiary) can also be prepared using this method.
If primary halides are replaced with secondary and tertiary halides, alkenes are the major products.

Certain types of leukocytes (WBC) of our body like polymorpho-nuclear leukocytes (PMNL-neutrophils) and monocytes and natural killer (type of lymphocytes) in the blood as well as macrophages in tissues can phagocytose and destroy microbes. For determining the cause of allergy, the patient is exposed to or injected with very small doses of possible allergens, and the reactions studied. The use of drugs like anti-histamine, adrenalin and steroids quickly reduce the symptoms of allergy. Heroin, commonly called smack is chemically diacetylmorphine which is a white, odourless, bitter crystalline compound. This is obtained by acetylation of morphine. Techniques like radiography (use of X-rays), CT (computed tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) are very useful to detect cancers of the internal organs. Different species of Plasmodium (P. vivax, P. malaria and P. falciparum) are responsible for different types of malaria. Of these, malignant malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum is the most serious one and can even be fatal.

B12. Cheese is one of the oldest food items in which microbes are used. For example, large holes in Swiss cheese are due to CO2 produced by the bacterium Propionibacterium sharmanii. The BOD test measures the rate of uptake of oxygen by microorganisms in a sample of water and thus, indirectly, BOD is a measure of the organic matter present in the water. The greater the BOD of waste water, the more is its polluting potential. In anaerobic sludge digesters, bacteria produce a mixture of gases like methane, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide. These gases form biogas and can be used as a source of energy. Biofertilisers are organisms that enrich the nutrient quality of the soil. The main sources of biofertilisers are bacteria, fungi and cyanobacteria. You have studied about the nodules on the roots of leguminous plants formed by the symbiotic association of Rhizobium. These bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen into organic forms, which is used by the plant as a nutrient. Other bacteria can fix atmospheric nitrogen while free-living in the soil (examples Azospirillum and Azotobacter).
