What does a negative \(E ^{\circ}\) (standard reduction potential) value of a redox couple indicate?
- A Redox couple is a stronger reducing agent than couple \(H / H 2\) couple.
- B Redox couple is a weaker reducing agent than the \(H / H 2\) couple.
- C Redox couple is a stronger oxidising agent than the \(H ^3 / H _2\) couple.
- D Redox couple carry equivalent oxidising power as \(H / H 2\) couple.
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(A) Redox couple is a stronger reducing agent than couple \(H / H 2\) couple.
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
A negative \(E^{\circ}\) value indicates that the redox couple is a stronger reducing agent than the \(H^+ / H_2\) couple.

\(G = \frac{\kappa A}{l}\)=k (both \(A\) and \(l\) are unity in their appropriate units in m or cm)
Molar conductivity of a solution at a given concentration is the conductance of the volume \(V\) of solution containing one mole of electrolyte kept between two electrodes with area of cross section \(A\) and distance of unit length (\(l\)). Therefore,
\(\Lambda_m = \frac{\kappa A}{l}\)
Since \(l = 1\) and \(A = V\) (volume containing 1 mole of electrolyte),
\(\Lambda_m = \kappa V\)
If the length \(l\) in the column of an electrolytic cell is halved and its area of cross-section is tripled, then conductance (\(G\)) would become:"CUET 2023 Hard - Answer the question on the basis of passage given below:
Proteins are the polymers of about twenty different a-amino acids which are linked by peptide bonds. Proteins perform various structural and dynamic functions in the organisms. Proteins which contain only a-amino acids are called simple proteins. The secondary or tertiary structure of proteins get disturbed on change of pH or temperature and they are not able to perform their functions. This is called denaturation of proteins. Enzymes are biocatalysts which speed up the reactions in biosystems. Vitamins are accessory food factors required in the diet. They are classified as fat soluble (A, D, E and K) and water soluble (B group and C). Deficiency of vitamins leads to many diseases. Nucleic acids are the polymers of nucleotides which in turn consist of a base, a pentose sugar and phosphate moiety. Nucleic acids are responsible for the transfer of characters from parents to offsprings. There are two types of nucleic acids DNA and RNA. DNA contains a five carbon sugar molecule called 2-deoxyribose whereas RNA contains ribose.

The crystal field theory (CFT) is an electrostatic model which considers the metal-ligand bond to be ionic arising purely from electrostatic interactions between the metal ion and the ligand. Ligands are treated as point charges in case of anions or dipoles in case of neutral molecules. The five d orbitals in an isolated gaseous metal atom/ion have same energy, i.e., they are degenerate. This degeneracy is maintained if a spherically symmetrical field of negative charges surrounds the metal atom/ion. However, when this negative field is due to ligands (either anions or the negative ends of dipolar molecules like NH3 and H2O) in a complex, it becomes asymmetrical and the degeneracy of the d orbitals is lifted. It results in splitting of the d orbitals. The pattern of splitting depends upon the nature of the crystal field.
