"The rate constant of a first order reaction follows the equation
\(log\ k = 8.0 - \frac{5000}{T}\)
The activation energy \((E_a)\) for the reaction is:
(Given \(R = 8.3\ JK^{-1}\ mol^{-1}\))"
- A \(11.51\ kJ\ mol^{-1}\)
- B \(41.5\ kJ\ mol^{-1}\)
- C \(83.0\ kJ\ mol^{-1}\)
- D \(95.57\ kJ\ mol^{-1}\)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(D) \(95.57\ kJ\ mol^{-1}\)
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
\(log\\ k = log\\ A - \\frac{E_a}{2.303RT}\\) \(-\\frac{E_a}{2.303R} = -5000\\) \(E_a = 5000 \\times 2.303 \\times R\) \(E_a = 5000 \\times 2.303 \\times 8.3\\ J\\ mol^{-1}\) \(E_a = 95574.5\\ J\\ mol^{-1} = 95.57\\ kJ\\ mol^{-1}\)

\(KMnO _4\) is prepared by the fusion of \(MnO _2\) with an alkali metal hydroxide and an oxidizing agent like \(KNO _3\) to give a dark-green manganate ion which disproportionate to give permanganate as follows.
\(\begin{array}{l}2 MnO _2+4 KOH + O _2 \rightarrow 2 K_2 MnO _4+2 H _2 O \\ 3 K_2 MnO _4+4 H ^{+} \rightarrow 2 KMnO _4+ MnO _2+2 H _2 O \end{array}\)
On heating \(K _2 MnO _4\) decomposes at 513 K to give \(K _2 MnO _4\). Permanganate ion is tetrahedral and diamagnetic
Acidified \(KMnO _4\) acts a strong oxidizing agent which oxidizes oxalic acid, ferrous ions, nitrite ion and iodides.

The concentration dependence of the rate of a reaction is called the differential rate equation. It is not always convenient to determine the instantaneous rate, as it is measured by calculating the slope of the tangent at point 't' in the concentration vs time plot. This makes it difficult to determine the rate and hence the order of the reaction. This difficulty is overcome by integrating the differential rate equation. This integrated rate equation gives a direct relation between concentrations at different times and the rate constant. The integrated rate equations are different for the reactions having different reaction orders.

Amines are considered as derivatives of ammonia obtained by replacement of hydrogen atoms with alkyl or aryl groups. In nature they occur among proteins, vitamins, alkaloids and hormones. These can be primary, secondary or tertiary depending on the number of hydrogen groups replaced. They can be prepared from nitro compounds, alkyl halides, nitriles, amides etc. Due to unshared pair of electrons they behave as Lewis bases. Influence of the number of hydrogen atoms at nitrogen atom is displayed in physical properties such as solubility, boiling point and chemical reactions including basicity. Basic character of amines is expressed in terms of their \(K_b\) and \(p K_b\) values. Three classes of amines can be distinguished with p-toluene sulphonyl chloride which reacts with primary and secondary ddu amines. Amino group when attached to benzene ring behaves as an activating and ortho para directing group.

Carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids play an important role in the biochemical process of plants and animal kingdom.
Many aldehydes and ketones find applications in dye, perfumery and other industries.
The carbonyl carbon stom is \(s p^2\)-hybridized forming three sigma and one pi-bond with oxygen.
C-O bonds are polar bond due to high electronegativity of oxygen than carbon.
Hence the carbonyl carbon behaves as an electrophilic center and oxygen as a nucleophilic centre.
Primary and secondary alcohols yield aldehydes and ketones respectively upon oxidation with variety of oxidizing agents.
The boiling points of aldehydes and ketones differ from hydrocarbons and ethers.
Aldehydes and ketones undergo nucleophilic addition reaction due to presence of electrophilic carbonyl carbon.
Nucleophile and a proton add across the carbon oxygen double bond.
