The least reactive aldehyde towards HCN would be :
- A H CHO
- B \(CH _3 CHO\)
- C \(CH _3 CH _2 CHO\)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(D)
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
The reactivity of aldehydes towards nucleophilic addition decreases with increasing steric hindrance and electron-donating inductive/resonance effects. HCHO has the least steric hindrance. \(CH_3CHO\) has one methyl group (electron-donating, slight steric hindrance).…

Formaldehyde is the first member of the aldehydic series. It is present in green leaves of plants where its presence is supposed to be due to the reaction of \(CO_2\) with water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. Commercially, formaldehyde is obtained by the controlled oxidation of methane in the presence of molybdenum oxide (\(MoO\)) acting as a catalyst. Formaldehyde is a constituent of a number of polymers also called resins. These are non volatile solids or semi solids which are obtained directly from certain plants and can be synthesized in the laboratory.
Benzaldehyde is less reactive towards nucleophilic addition reaction than formaldehyde because of:CUET 2023 Medium - When \(Br_2\) is treated with aqueous solution of \(NaF, NaCl, NaI\) separately:CUET 2023 Easy

Carbohydrates are naturally formed organic compounds from various plants. The common chemical formula, \(C _x\left( H _2 O \right)_y\), was considered as hydrates of carbon to derive the various carbohydrates. For instance, the general formula for glucose ( \(C _6 H _{12} O _6\) ) easily fits into the above formula. Carbohydrates also called saccharides are classified on the basis of their behavior towards hydrolysis. Monosaccharides cannot be hydrolyzed further to simpler units of polyhydroxy aldehyde or ketones. About 20 monosaccharides are known to occur in nature. Carbohydrates that yield large number of monosaccharide units are called polysaccharides. Amino acids contain ( \(- NH _2\) ) and ( - COOH ), which can be classified in various forms. Proteins are polymers of alpha amino acids which are connected to each other by a peptide bond or peptide linkage. When a native protein is subjected to physical change, its globules unfold and helix get uncoiled and the protein loses its biological activity. The protein is said to be denaturated.

- Answer the question on the basis of passage given below:
Second period elements of p-Block differs from the rest of their group members due to their small atomic size, high electronegativity, high ionization enthalpy and absence of d-orbitals. The elements from the second period like C, N, O have unique property of forming \(p \pi-p \pi\) multiple bonds whereas other heavier elements of p-block form \(d \pi-p \pi\) multiple bonds. This changes the properties of second period elements to great extent. Also the single bond strength of the p-block elements with their own atoms gets affected by their atomic size and presence of lone pairs.
Inert pair effect also affects the properties of the p-Block elements especially for those elements which are present from 4th period onward and this happens due to poor screening effect of inner (n-1)d subshell electrons.
