Aldehydes and ketones are important organic compounds prepared mainly by oxidation of alcohols. Primary alcohols give aldehyde and secondary alcohols yield ketones. Aldehydes can also be formed by partial reduction of acid chlorides, reduction of esters or by Gattermann-Koch reaction. Ketones are prepared by Friedel-Craft's acylation, hydration of alkyne and reaction of Grignard's reagent with nitriles. Chemically, aldehydes and ketones are reactive in nature due to the carbonyl group and undergo nucleophilic addition reactions. Aldehydes are more reactive than ketones and can be oxidized to carboxylic acids, while both can be reduced to alcohols or hydrocarbons and exhibit condensation reaction

Optically active polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones or molecules which provide such units on hydrolysis are called carbohydrates. They can be broadly classified as monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides depending on their behavior towards hydrolysis. They are also classified as reducing or non-reducing sugars. Another class of biomolecules is proteins which are polymers of twenty different amino acids linked by peptide bonds. Amino acids can be classified as acidic, basic or neutral depending on the relative number of amino and carboxyl groups in their molecule. The essential amino acids cannot be synthesized by our body and hence must be provided through diet. Nucleic acids are the polymers of nucleotides which in turn consist of a base, pentose sugar and phosphate. There are two types of nucleic acids namely, DNA and RNA which differ in the composition of sugar and a base

In the formation of coordination complexes, if the inner \(d\) orbital \((n - 1)d\) is used in hybridisation, the complex, is called an inner orbital or low spin or spin paired complex. And if it uses outer \(d\) orbital \((nd)\) in hybridisation (like \(sp^3d^2\)), it is called outer orbital or high spin or spin free complex. The degeneracy of the \(d\) orbitals has been removed due to ligand electron-metal electron repulsions in the complex. This splitting of the degenerate levels due to the presence of ligands in a definite geometry is termed as crystal field splitting. For coordination complexes, the magnetic moment is determined by the number of unpaired electrons and is calculated by using the 'spin-only' formula, \(\mu = \sqrt{n(n+2)}\) where \(n\) is the number of unpaired electrons and \(\mu\) is the magnetic moment in units of Bohr magneton \((BM)\). The coordination compounds are of great importance. These compounds are widely present in the mineral, plant and animal worlds and are known to play many important functions in the area of analytical chemistry, metallurgy, biological systems, industry and medicine.
Fe(II) octahedral complexes can show different 'spin only' magnetic moments for arrangements in the presence of weak and strong ligands. The 'spin only' magnetic moments of these complexes with weak and strong ligands, respectively, areCUET 2023 Medium

Carboxylic acids are the earliest organic compounds isolated from nature. These are also known as organic acids but are weaker acids as compared to mineral acids. However, they are more acidic than alcohols and phenols because of greater resonance stabilization of the parent acid and its conjugate base. The acidic strength is determined by the \(K _a\), which is called the acidity constant.
The greater the value of \(K _a\), the greater the tendency of the acid to ionize and hence the stronger the acid. The acidic strength of the saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid depends upon the inductive effect and its position with respect to - COOH groups. Electron -donating substituents tend to decrease whereas electron-withdrawing substituents tend to increase the acidic strength. The acidic strength of the aromatic carboxylic acid, on the other hand depends upon both the inductive effect and the resonance effect of the substituents.
Arrange the following acids in decreasing order of acidity
(A) \(CH _3 CH _2 OH\)
(B) \(CH _3 COOH\)
(C) \(BrCH _2 COOH\)
