- Question based on the following passage: P-Block elements are placed in group 13 to 18 in the periodic table. Group 15 is nitrogen family.
Nitrogen can react with hydrogen, oxygen, halogens etc. It shows multiple oxidation states in its various oxides i.e. \(N_2O, N_2O_3, N_2O_5\) etc. Important allotropic forms of phosphorus are white, red and black phosporus. Various compounds of phosphorus are phosphine, \(PCl_3, PCl_5\) and oxoacids of phosphorus. Oxidation states \(+1\) to \(+5\) are seen in various oxoacids of phosphorus. Group 17 elements are collectively known as halogens. Bond dissociation enthalpy of \(F_2\) is smaller than \(Cl_2\).
The gases present in group 18 are chemically unreactive, they form only few compounds. Neil Bartlett (in 1962) observed the reaction of a noble gas. Since then, many noble gas compounds have been synthesised.

- Answer the question on the basis of passage given below:
In the periodic table, the d-block contains the elements of group \(3\) to \(12\). The d-orbitals are progressively filled in each of the four long periods. The elements of d block referred as transition metals have partly filled d orbitals and exhibit certain characteristic properties such as variety of oxidation states, formation of coloured ions, act as catalyst and show paramagnetic behaviour.
The two inner transition metals series \(4f\) and \(5f\) are known as Lanthanoids and Actinoids respectively. The lanthanoids resemble one another more closely as compared to ordinary transition elements in any series.

Haloalkanes undergo nucelophilic substitution reactions owing to the polarity of C X bond. The nucleophile reacts with the haloalkane on the carbon possessing a partial positive charge holding the halogen atom. The halogen atom \(X\) is replaced by a nucleophile. Depending on the kinetics and mode of bond breaking, the mechanism can be either SN1 or SN2 reaction. The rate of SN1 reaction is governed by the stability of carbocation and in SN2 reaction, the rate of reaction is governed by steric factor. Chirality is the main factor in both SN1and SN2. In SN1 reaction, the chirality of alkyl halide is accompanied by racemization of the product, while in SN2 reaction, the product is characterized by inversion of configuration. The structure of alkyl halide and the nature of the solvent also governs the mechanism of the substitution.
