The term vitamin was coined from the word vital +amine since the earlier identified compounds had amino groups.
Later work showed that most of them didn't contain amino groups, so the letter "e" was dropped and ther term vitamin is used these days.
Vitamins are classified into two groups depending upon their solubility in water or fat. Fat soluble vitamins are soluble in fat and oils but insoluble in water. They are stored in liver and adipose (fat storing) tissues. Water-soluble vitamins are soluble in water. They must be supplied regularly in the diet as they are readily excreated in urine.

Optically active polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones or molecules which provide such units on hydrolysis are called carbohydrates. They can be broadly classified as monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides depending on their behavior towards hydrolysis. They are also classified as reducing or non-reducing sugars. Another class of biomolecules is proteins which are polymers of twenty different amino acids linked by peptide bonds. Amino acids can be classified as acidic, basic or neutral depending on the relative number of amino and carboxyl groups in their molecule. The essential amino acids cannot be synthesized by our body and hence must be provided through diet. Nucleic acids are the polymers of nucleotides which in turn consist of a base, pentose sugar and phosphate. There are two types of
nucleic acids namely, DNA and RNA which differ in the composition of sugar and a base

The osmotic pressure is one of the four colligative properties which depends on the number of particles of solute in the solution, irrespective of their nature. The osmotic pressure is equal to the product of concentration, gas constant and temperature. It is the most commonly used property for the determination of the molar mass of biomolecules. In many situations, the molecules get dissociated or associated when they are dissolved in a solvent, thereby changing the number of molecules in the solution. As a result, an abnormal molecular mass is obtained. The extent of dissociation or association is given by van't Hoff factor (i), which is the ratio of normal molar mass to abnormal molar mass. It is related with the degree of association or ionization. The introduction of van't Hoff factor in the osmotic pressure equation modifies the equation.
