The osmotic pressure is one of the four colligative properties which depends on the number of particles of solute in the solution, irrespective of their nature. The osmotic pressure is equal to the product of concentration, gas constant and temperature. It is the most commonly used property for the determination of the molar mass of biomolecules. In many situations, the molecules get dissociated or associated when they are dissolved in a solvent, thereby changing the number of molecules in the solution. As a result, an abnormal molecular mass is obtained. The extent of dissociation or association is given by van't Hoff factor (i), which is the ratio of normal molar mass to abnormal molar mass. It is related with the degree of association or ionization. The introduction of van't Hoff factor in the osmotic pressure equation modifies the equation.
How is the osmotic pressure of a concentrated solution related to the osmotic pressure of a dilute solution of the same substance at a given temperature?
- A Lower than that of its dilute solution.
- B Same as its dilute solution.
- C Higher than that of its dilute solution.
- D Cannot compare on concentration basis until we know the nature of that solute.
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(C) Higher than that of its dilute solution.
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
Osmotic pressure \( \Pi = iCRT \). For the same substance and temperature, \( i, R, T \) are constant. Thus, \( \Pi \propto C \). A concentrated solution has higher concentration (\( C \)) than a dilute solution. Therefore, the osmotic pressure of a concentrated solution is…

The accumulation of molecular species at the surface rather than in the bulk of a solid or liquid is termed as adsorption. There are two types of adsorption. In physisorption, attractive forces are mainly Van der Waals while in chemical adsorption adsorbate is held with chemical bonds adsorbent. Adsorption increases with increase in pressure and decreases as temperature is increased.

Pollen pistil interaction involves all events from the landing of pollen grains on the stigma until the pollen tube enters the embryo sac (when the pollen is compatible). When a pollen tube grows through the style and enters into the ovules, it finally discharges two male gametes in one of the synergids. Syngamy and triple fusion are two fusion events occur in angiosperms. Thus, angiosperms exhibit double fertilization. The products of these fusions are the diploid zygote and triploid primary endosperm nucleus. Zygote develops into embryo and primary endosperm cell forms the endosperm tissue. The developing embryo passes through different stages before maturation.
