Read the passage carefully and answer
The crystal field theory (CFT) is an electrostatic model which considers the metal-ligand bond to be ionic arising purely from electrostatic interactions between the metal ion and the ligand. Ligands are treated as point charges in case of anions or dipoles in case of neutral molecules. The five d orbitals in an isolated gaseous metal atom/ion have same energy, i.e., they are degenerate. This degeneracy is maintained if a spherically symmetrical field of negative charges surrounds the metal atom/ion. However, when this negative field is due to ligands (either anions or the negative ends of dipolar molecules like NH3 and H2O) in a complex, it becomes asymmetrical and the degeneracy of the d orbitals is lifted. It results in splitting of the d orbitals. The pattern of splitting depends upon the nature of the crystal field.
The hybridisation and magnetism of the complexes \(\left[\mathrm{Co}\left(\mathrm{C}_2 \mathrm{O}_4\right)_3\right]^{3-}\) and \(\left[\mathrm{Mn}(\mathrm{CN})_6\right]^{3-}\) respectively is:
- A ( \(d^2 s p^3\), diamagnetic) and ( \(d^2 s p^3\), diamagnetic)
- B ( \(s p^3 d^2\), diamagnetic) and ( \(d^2 s p^3\), paramagnetic)
- C ( \(d^2 s p^3\), diamagnetic) and ( \(d^2 s p^3\), paramagnetic)
- D ( \(d^2 s p^3\), paramagnetic) and ( \(s p^3 d^2\), diamagnetic)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(C) ( \(d^2 s p^3\), diamagnetic) and ( \(d^2 s p^3\), paramagnetic)
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
\(\left[\mathrm{Co}\left(\mathrm{C}_2 \mathrm{O}_4\right)_3\right]^{3-}\): \(\mathrm{Co}^{3+} \implies 3d^6\). \(\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{O}_4^{2-}\) is strong field \(\implies t_{2g}^6 e_g^0\) (low spin). Hybridization: \(\mathrm{d}^2sp^3\). Magnetism: Diamagnetic.…

The noble gases have closed shell electronic configuration and are monatomic gases under normal conditions. The low boiling points of lighter noble gases are due to the weak dispersion forces between the atoms and the absence of other inter atomic interaction. The direct reaction of xenon with fluorine leads to a series of compounds with oxidation numbers \(+2, +4\) and \(+6\).
\(\text{XeF}_4\) reacts violently with water to give \(\text{XeO}_3\). The compound of Xenon exhibit stereoisomerism and their geometries can be deduced considering the total number of electrons in the valence shell.
