- Elements of group-15, 16 and 17 form compounds with hydrogen with general formula MH3, \(H 2 M\) and HX (called hydrogen halides). Stability of these hydrides, along with M-H bond strength and basic nature decreases down the group. Boiling point of these hydrides mainly depends on the strength of their inter molecular forces.
Decreasing order of boiling point of group 15 hydrides is:
A. \(NH _3\)
B. \(PH _3\)
C. \(AsH _3\)
D. \(SbH _3\)
E. \(BiH _3\)

The carbonyl group of aldehydes and ketones is highly polar. The positively charged carbon is readily attacked by electron-rich nucleophile and the negatively charged oxygen atom is attacked by an electro-deficient electrophile. Aldehydes and ketones undergo nucleophilic addition reactions in the presence of acid or a base. The mechanism involves attack of a nucleophile on the electron deficient carbonyl carbon to form a tetrahedral intermediate. A new bond is formed between the carbon and oxygen. Protonation of the anion furnished by the reaction medium yields a neutral addition product. The addition product is same whether the reaction is catalyzed by acid or a base. For example in the presence of base aldehydes and ketones react with hydrogen cyanide to form cyanohydrin.
The source of nucleophile in the base catalyzed cyanohydrin formation is:CUET 2025 Hard - The major product of Kolbe's reaction is used for the synthesis of a precursor substrate in the preparation of aspirin

The osmotic pressure is one of the four colligative properties which depends on the number of particles of solute in the solution, irrespective of their nature. The osmotic pressure is equal to the product of concentration, gas constant and temperature. It is the most commonly used property for the determination of the molar mass of biomolecules. In many situations, the molecules get dissociated or associated when they are dissolved in a solvent, thereby changing the number of molecules in the solution. As a result, an abnormal molecular mass is obtained. The extent of dissociation or association is given by van't Hoff factor (i), which is the ratio of normal molar mass to abnormal molar mass. It is related with the degree of association or ionization. The introduction of van't Hoff factor in the osmotic pressure equation modifies the equation.
