Amines are considered as derivatives of ammonia obtained by replacement of hydrogen atoms with alkyl or aryl groups. In nature they occur among proteins, vitamins, alkaloids and hormones. These can be primary, secondary or tertiary depending on the number of hydrogen groups replaced. They can be prepared from nitro compounds, alkyl halides, nitriles, amides etc. Due to unshared pair of electrons they behave as Lewis bases. Influence of the number of hydrogen atoms at nitrogen atom is displayed in physical properties such as solubility, boiling point and chemical reactions including basicity. Basic character of amines is expressed in terms of their K, and pK; values. Three classes of amines can be distinguished with p-toluene sulphonyl chloride which reacts with primary and secondary mines. Amino group when ttached to benzene ring behaves as an activating and ortho para directing group.

Many halogen containing organic compounds are present in nature and some of them are clinically useful. These classes of organic compounds find a wide range of applications in our daily life as well as in industries. Many of the polyhalogen compounds are useful too in agriculture. However, some of these compounds cannot be easily decomposed and are thus considered to be environmental hazards. These halo compounds are prepared via different synthetic routes where a variety of organic compounds can be used as substrates such as amines, hydrocarbons etc. They are used as solvents for relatively non-polar compounds. These compounds exhibit substitution and elimination reactions, in addition to their reactions with different metals, which leads to the formation of a versatile starting material for others organic compounds.

The term vitamin was coined from the word vital +amine since the earlier identified compounds had amino groups. Later work showed that most of them didn't contain amino groups, so the letter "e" was dropped and ther term vitamin is used these days.
Vitamins are classified into two groups depending upon their solubility in water or fat. Fat soluble vitamins are soluble in fat and oils but insoluble in water. They are stored in liver and adipose (fat storing) tissues. Water-soluble vitamins are soluble in water. They must be supplied regularly in the diet as they are readily excreated in urine.
