- Question based on the following passage :
P-Block elements are placed in group 13 to 18 in the periodic table. Group 15 is nitrogen family.
Nitrogen can react with hydrogen, oxygen, halogens etc. It shows multiple oxidation states in its various oxides i.e. \(N_2O, N_2O_3, N_2O_5\) etc. Important allotropic forms of phosphorus are white, red and black phosporus. Various compounds of phosphorus are phosphine, \(PCl_3, PCl_5\) and oxoacids of phosphorus. Oxidation states \(+1\) to \(+5\) are seen in various oxoacids of phosphorus. Group 17 elements are collectively known as halogens. Bond dissociation enthalpy of \(F_2\) is smaller than \(Cl_2\).
The gases present in group 18 are chemically unreactive, they form only few compounds. Neil Bartlett (in 1962) observed the reaction of a noble gas. Since then, many noble gas compounds have been synthesised.

The coordination compounds are of great importance. These compounds are widely present in the mineral, plants and animal world and are known to play many important functions in the area of analytical chemistry, metallurgy, biological systems, industry and medicine. For example, coordination compounds find use in many qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis. Some important metal extraction and purification make use of complex formation. Hardness of water can be estimated by stable complex formation of Ca\(^{2+}\) and Mg\(^{2+}\)

(i) Why only certain elements possess the remarkable property of forming coordination compounds ?
(ii) Why the bonds in coordination compounds have directional properties ?
(iii) Why coordination compounds have characteristics magnetic and optical properties ?
Many approaches have been put forth to explain the nature of bonding in coordination compounds viz. Valence Bond Theory (VBT), Crystal Field Theory (CFT), Ligand Field Theory (LFT) and Molecular Orbital Theory (MOT).
We shall focus our attention on elementary treatment of the application of VBT and CFT to coordination compounds.
According to this theory, the metal atom or ion under the influence of ligands can use its ( \(n -1\) )d, ns np or ns, np, nd orbitals for hybridisation to yield a set of equivalent orbitals of definite geometry such as octahedral, tetrahedral, square planar and so on.
These hybridised orbitals are allowed to overlap with ligand orbitals that can donate electron pairs for bonding.

A. The metal-carbon bond has both \(\sigma\) and \(\pi\) characters.
B. Metal-carbon \(\sigma\) bond is formed by donation of lone pair of electrons on carbonyl carbon into vacant \(d\)-orbital of metal.
C. Metal-ligand bond has synergic effect.
D. Transition metals never have zero oxidation state in carbonyls.
E. Metal-carbon \(\pi\) bond is formed by donation of electrons from antibonding molecular orbital of CO to metal.

In the year 1963 the two enzymes responsible for restricting the growth of bacteriophage in E. coli were isolated. The first restriction endonuclease - Hind II, whose functioning depended on a specific DNA nucleotide sequence was characterized five years later. It was found that Hind II always cut DNA molecules at a particular point by recognizing a specific sequence of six base pairs. This specific base sequence is known as the recognition sequence for Hind II. Besides Hind II, today we know more than 900 restriction enzymes that have been isolated from over 230 strains of bacteria, each of which recognize different recognition sequences.
When DNA from different sources is cut by the same restriction enzymes, the resultant DNA fragments have the :CUET 2025 Easy - Acetaldehyde on treatment with Fehling's solution gives a precipitate ofCUET 2025 Hard
