P block elements are placed in groups 13 to 18 of the periodic table. Their valence shell electronic configuration is \(ns^2 np^{1-6}\). Group 16 of the p block elements are known as the group of chalcogens having \(ns^2 np^4\) as their general electronic configuration. They exhibit number of oxidation states but the stability of \(- 2\) oxidation state decreases down the group. They are sometimes also known as group of chalcogens as the name is derived from the Greek word for brass and points to the association of sulphur and its congeners with copper. Their ionisation enthalpy decreases down the group. Oxygen shows anomalous behaviour due to its small size and high electronegativity.

Aldehydes, carboxylic acids and ketones are widespread in the animal and plant kingdoms. They play a pivotal role in various biochemical processes of life. Their presence in nature adds fragrance and flavor. These compounds are widely used in food products, pharmaceuticals, paints, resins and other important product industries. These compounds are prepared by various laboratory methods, which mainly include oxidation, formylation, acylation and reduction. Due to the polar nature of the carbonyl group in aldehydes and ketones, they can exhibit different reactions like nucleophilic addition. They do exhibit redox and various condensation reactions which lead to the formation of various important compounds. On the other hand, the carboxylic acids are mainly prepared by oxidation and hydrolysis of different compounds. The carboxylic acid consists of a carbonyl group and the hydroxy group (attached to the carbonyl carbon atom). This makes it possible for the carboxylic acid to participate in various chemical reactions which involve cleavage of the \(C - OH\) bond and the O-H bond along with the reactions involving the complete - COOH group.

- Read the passage carefully and answer the questions based on the passage:
Alcohols are versatile compounds as they can act as both nucleophile and electrophile. They undergo reactions based on cleavage of \(\mathrm{O}-\mathrm{H}\) and \(\mathrm{C}-\mathrm{O}\) bonds. The cleavage of \(\mathrm{O}-\mathrm{H}\) bond reflects the acidic character of alcohols. However they are weaker acids than water, phenol and carboxylic acids. Alkoxide ion formed by loss of proton from the OH group of alcohols reacts with water to form the corresponding conjugate acid - base pair. They act as Bronsted base due to presence of unshared electron pairs on oxygen. Both alcohols and phenol react with carboxylic acids, acid chlorides and anhydrides to form esters. The introduction of acetyl group in alcohols or phenol is known as acetylation. Alcohols react with hydrogen halides to form alkyl halides which form the basis of Lucas test. They also undergo acid catalyzed dehydration to form alkenes. Alcohols can be easily oxidized with variety of oxidizing agents. The nature of the product depends on the type of oxidizing agent and the nature of alcohol.
