Choose the correct answer from the options given below :CUET 2023 Medium - Amines are reactive in nature, mainly due to difference in electronegativity between Nitrogen and Hydrogen and, due to lone pair of electrons on Nitrogen. Amines behave like nucleophiles and as good lewis bases and there are various reactions to support this. Different degree of amines differ in their reactivity due to steric hinderance and electronic effects. Aromatic amines are less basic due to + R effect, hence have higher pkb value than aliphatic amines. Basic strength of amines also depends on stability of corresponding conjugate acid in aqueous medium.

Carbohydrates are essential for both plants and animals. Some common examples of carbohydrates are glucose, fructose, sucrose, glycogen, cellulose and starch. They form a major portion of our food. Honey has been used for a long time as an instant source of energy in Ayurvedic medicine. Carbohydrates are used as storage molecules in both plants and animals. The cell wall of bacteria and plants is made of cellulose. We use cellulose in the form of wood for making furniture and as cotton fiber for clothing. They also provide raw material for textiles,
paper, lacquers, and breweries. Carbohydrates are classified as Monosaccharides, Oligosaccharides and Polysaccharides on the basis of their behavior towards hydrolysis. Monosaccharides cannot be hydrolyzed further to simpler units whereas oligosaccharides can yield 2-10 units of monosaccharides on hydrolysis. Polysaccharides, which are non-sugars yield a large number of monosaccharide units on hydrolysis.

Electrochemistry is the study involving two types of processes. One type involves the production of electricity from the energy released during a spontaneous chemical reaction. Galvanic cells like Daniel cells are used to produce electricity from the redox reaction. Nernst equation of a galvanic cell gives the relation between the standard cell potential and the concentration of the species involved in the redox reaction. The second type of study involves the cells in which electrical energy is used to bring about the chemical reactions in a non-spontaneous process. The conductance of electrolytic solution depends on many factors including the nature of the electrolyte and the dimensions of the electrolytic cell.

The speed at which a chemical reaction takes place is called the rate of reaction. The rate of reaction depends on various factors like concentration of the reactants, temperature, etc. The relation between the rate of reaction and the concentration of reacting species is represented by the equation r = k[A]x[B]y, where x and y are the order of the reaction with respect to the reactants A and B, respectively. The overall order of the reaction is x + y. The rate of reaction can also be increased by the use of a catalyst which provides an alternate pathway of lower activation energy. It increases the rate of forward and backward reaction to an equal extent. It does not alter the Gibbs energy of the reaction.
