Conversion of molecule X to Y follows second order kinetics. If concentration of X is increased to three times how will it affect the rate of formation of Y?
- A the rate will increase 3 times
- B the rate will increase 9 times
- C the rate will increase \(1 / 3\) times
- D the rate will increase \(\sqrt{3}\) times
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(B) the rate will increase 9 times
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
Rate \( = k[X]^2 \) New Rate \( = k[3X]^2 = 9k[X]^2 \) New Rate \( = 9 \times \text{Initial Rate} \) The rate will increase 9 times.

The concentration dependence of the rate of a reaction is called the differential rate equation. It is not always convenient to determine the instantaneous rate, as it is measured by calculating the slope of the tangent at point 't' in the concentration vs time plot. This makes it difficult to determine the rate and hence the order of the reaction. This difficulty is overcome by integrating the differential rate equation. This integrated rate equation gives a direct relation between concentrations at different times and the rate constant. The integrated rate equations are different for the reactions having different reaction orders.

Haloalkanes undergo nucelophilic substitution reactions owing to the polarity of CX bond. The nucleophile reacts with the haloalkane on the carbon possessing a partial positive charge holding the halogen atom. The halogen atom X is replaced by a nucleophile. Depending on the kinetics and mode of bond breaking, the mechanism can be either SN1 or SN2 reaction. The rate of SN1 reaction is governed by the stability of carbocation and in SN2 reaction, the rate of reaction is governed by steric factor. Chirality is the main factor in both SN1and SN2. In SN1 reaction, the chirality of alkyl halide is accompanied by racemization of the product, while in SN2 reaction, the product is characterized by inversion of configuration. The structure of alkyl halide and the nature of the solvent also governs the mechanism of the substitution.
Hydrolysis of 2-Chlorobutane will result in formation ofCUET 2025 Medium - p-block elements are placed in groups 13 to 18 of the periodic table. Group 15 is nitrogen family. Nitrogen makes various compounds like \(NH _3, HNO _3, N_2 O , NO _2\) etc. Phosphorus exists in the form of white and red phosphorus. White phosphorus glows in dark. \(PH _3\) gas is used as smoke screen. Group 16 is called oxygen family. Dry air contains \(21\% O _2\) gas by volume. Combined sulphur exists as sulphates such as gypsum, epsome salt, baryte etc. The allotropic forms of sulphur are Rhombic and monoclinic sulphur. \(S_2\) is paramagnetic like \(O_2\) and it stable at high temperature.
Group 17 is Halogen family. \(F_2\) is highly reactive, \(C l_2\) is greenish yellow gas. Both \(S O_2\) and \(C l_2\) are used for bleaching. Group 18 is Noble gas family but some noble gases also form compounds.

Organic compounds derived from NH3 by replacing one or more H-atoms with alkyl or aryl groups will form primary, secondary and tertiary amines. The common methods which include their preparations are reduction of nitro group, amide group and nitrile group, Gabriel phthalimide synthesis and ammonolysis of alkyl halides. Amines are basic in nature due to the presence of a lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom. Important chemical properties of amines include acylation, alkylation and their interaction with nitrous acid. There are various tests which can distinguish different types of amines from each other, for e.g. carbylamine test, Hinsberg's test, coupling reaction etc. Another important class of compounds which can be derived from primary amines is azo compounds. These compounds are intensely colored and widely used as dyes in textile, leather and food industries.

Formaldehyde is the first member of the aldehydic series. It is present in green leaves of plants where its presence is supposed to be due to the reaction of \(CO_2\) with water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. Commercially, formaldehyde is obtained by the controlled oxidation of methane in the presence of molybdenum oxide (\(MoO\)) acting as a catalyst. Formaldehyde is a constituent of a number of polymers also called resins. These are non volatile solids or semi solids which are obtained directly from certain plants and can be synthesized in the laboratory.
