Werner in 1898, propounded his theory of coordination compounds. In coordination compounds metals show two types of linkages (valences)-primary and secondary. The primary valences are normally ionisable and are satisfied by negative ions. The secondary valences are non-ionisable. These are satisfied by neutral molecules or negative ions. The secondary valence is equal to the coordination number and is fixed for a metal. The ions or group bound by the secondary linkages to the metal have characteristic spatial arrangements corresponding to the different coordination numbers. Both double salts as well as complexes are formed by the combination of two or more stable compounds in stoichiometric ratio. However, they differ in the fact that double salts such as carnallite, Mohr's salt, potash alum etc. dissociate into simple ions completely when dissolved in water. But complex ions do not dissociate completely into simple ions.

Kinetic studies not only help us to determine the rate of a chemical reaction but also describe the conditions by which the reaction rates can be altered. The factors such as concentration, temperature, pressure and catalyst affect the rate of a reaction.
The speed of a reaction or the rate of a reaction can be defined as the change in concentration of a reactant or product in unit time.
Rate \(=k[A]^{\text {a }}[B]^{\text {y }}\)
Here \(k\) is the rate constant
\(x+y\) gives the overall order of a reaction, whereas \(x\) and \(y\) repreeent the order with respect to the reactants \(A\) and \(B\), respectively.

- Amines are reactive in nature, mainly due to difference in electronegativity between Nitrogen and Hydrogen and, due to lone pair of electrons on Nitrogen. Amines behave like nucleophiles and as good lewis bases and there are various reactions to support this. Different degree of amines differ in their reactivity due to steric hinderance and electronic effects. Aromatic amines are less basic due to + R effect, hence have higher pkb value than aliphatic amines. Basic strength of amines also depends on stability of corresponding conjugate acid in aqueous medium.

Adsorption is a surface phenomenon and it differs from absorption which occurs throughout the body of the substance that absorbs. In physiosorption the attractive forces are mainly van der Waal's forces while in chemisorption ionic/covalent bonds are formed between particles of adsorbent and adsorbate. The catalytic activity of finely divided iron in Haber's process of ammonia manufacture can be explained by adsorption theory. Adsorption being an exothermic process, the heat of adsorption is utilised in enhancing the rate of the reaction. Adsorption has many applications being used in gas masks, control of humidity, chromatograph separation, curing diseases etc.
