CUET · CHEMISTRY · PYQ PAPER 2025
Choose the correct statements about interstitial compounds from the following:
(A) They have low melting points, lower than those of pure metals
(B) They are perfect-stoichiometric compounds
(C) These are formed when small atoms like H, C or N are trapped inside the crystal lattices of metals
(D) They are neither typically ionic nor covalent
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
- A (A), (B) and (D) only
- B (C) and (D) only
- C (A), (B), and (C) only
- D (B), and (C) only
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(B) (C) and (D) only
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
Statement (A) is incorrect (they have high melting points, often higher than pure metals). Statement (B) is incorrect (they are typically non-stoichiometric). Statement (C) is correct. Statement (D) is correct. The correct statements are (C) and (D).

In the periodic table, the d-block contains the elements of group \(3\) to \(12\). The d-orbitals are progressively filled in each of the four long periods. The elements of d block referred as transition metals have partly filled d orbitals and exhibit certain characteristic properties such as variety of oxidation states, formation of coloured ions, act as catalyst and show paramagnetic behaviour.
The two inner transition metals series \(4f\) and \(5f\) are known as Lanthanoids and Actinoids respectively. The lanthanoids resemble one another more closely as compared to ordinary transition elements in any series.

According to Valence Bond theory, the metal atom or ion under the influence of ligands can use its ( \(n-1\) )d, \(n s, n p\) or \(n s, n p, n d\) orbitals for hybridisation to yield a set of equivalent orbitals of definite geometry such as octahedral, tetrahedral, square planar and so on. These hybridised orbitals are allowed to overlap with ligand orbitals that can donate electron pairs for bonding. While the VB theory, to a larger extent, explains the formation, structures and magnetic behaviour of coordination compounds, it suffers from the many shortcomings. The Crystal field theory (CFT) is an electrostatic model which considers the metal-ligand bond to be ionic arising purely from electrostatic interactions between the metal ion and the ligand. The five \(d\) orbitals in an isolated gaseous metal atom/ion have same energy, i.e., they are degenerate. This degeneracy is maintained if a spherically symmetrical field of negative charges surrounds the metal atom/lon. However, when this negative field is due to ligands in a complex, it becomes asymmetrical and the degeneracy of the \(d\) orbitals is lifted. It results in splitting of the \(d\) orbitals. The pattern of splitting depends upon the nature of the crystal field.
