Carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids play an important role in the biochemical process of plants and animal kingdom.
Many aldehydes and ketones find applications in dye, perfumery and other industries.
The carbonyl carbon atom is \(s p^2\)-hybridized forming three sigma and one pi-bond with oxygen.
C-O bonds are polar bond due to high electronegativity of oxygen than carbon.
Hence the carbonyl carbon behaves as an electrophilic center and oxygen as a nucleophilic centre.
Primary and secondary alcohols yield aldehydes and ketones respectively upon oxidation with variety of oxidizing agents.
The boiling points of aldehydes and ketones differ from hydrocarbons and ethers.
Aldehydes and ketones undergo nucleophilic addition reaction due to presence of electrophilic carbonyl carbon.
Nucleophile and a proton add across the carbon oxygen double bond.

One of the notable features of the transition element is the great variety of oxidation states it may show in its compounds. The elements which give the greatest number of oxidation states occur in or near the middle of the series. Manganese, for example exhibits all the oxidation states from +2 to +7. The lesser number of oxidation states at the extreme ends is either due to losing or sharing of few electrons (Sc, Ti) or too many d electrons of higher valence. Early in the first series scandium (II) is virtually unknown and titanium (IV) which is more stable than Ti (III) or Ti (II). On the other end, the only oxidation state of zinc is \(+ 2\).

The osmotic pressure is one of the four colligative properties which depends on the number of particles of solute in the solution, irrespective of their nature. The osmotic pressure is equal to the product of concentration, gas constant and temperature. It is the most commonly used property for the determination of the molar mass of biomolecules. In many situations, the molecules get dissociated or associated when they are dissolved in a solvent, thereby changing the number of molecules in the solution. As a result, an abnormal molecular mass is obtained. The extent of dissociation or association is given by van't Hoff factor (i), which is the ratio of normal molar mass to abnormal molar mass. It is related with the degree of association or ionization. The introduction of van't Hoff factor in the osmotic pressure equation modifies the equation.
How is the osmotic pressure of a concentrated solution related to the osmotic pressure of a dilute solution of the same substance at a given temperature?CUET 2025 Hard - The integrating factor of the linear differential equation \(\frac{d y}{d x}+P(x) y=Q(x)\) is:CUET 2023 Medium
