Answer the questions on the basis of passage given below :
As aldehydes ketones possess the carbonyl functional group, they show similar reactions. They exhibit nucleophilic addition reactions, reduction, oxidations, reactions due to alpha-Hydrogen atom, and many other reactions, like Cannizzaro reaction to electrophilic substitution reactions (in case of aromatic aldehydes ketones).
These reactions help in the preparation of a number of important compounds, like acetic acid, vinyl acetate, polymers and in perfume and dye industries.
Nucleophilic addition reactions form cyanohydrins, acetals, alcohols and N -substituted derivatives like imine, oxime, semicarbazone, phenylhydrazone Schiff's base. Reactions due to alpha-hydrogen atoms help in formation of aldols and alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehydes ketones.
Which of the following combinations of Grignard's reagent and carbonyl compound can give \(C _6 H _5- C ( OH )\left( CH _3\right)- CH \left( CH _3\right)_2\)
A. \(C _6 H _5 CH _2 MgBr +\left( CH _3\right)_2 CH - CHO\)
B. \(C _6 H _5 MgBr + CH _3- CO - CH \left( CH _3\right)_2\)
C. \(CH _3 MgBr + C _6 H _5- CO - CH \left( CH _3\right)_2\)
D. \(C _6 H _5- CO - CH _3+\left( CH _3\right)_2 CHMgBr\)
E. \(C _6 H _5 CH ( MgBr ) CH _3+\left( CH _3\right)_2 CO\)
Choose the correct answer from the option given below :
- A A, B and C only
- B A, E and C only
- C E, B, D and C only
- D B, C and D only
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(D) B, C and D only
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
The target alcohol is \(C_6H_5 - C(OH)(CH_3) - CH(CH_3)_2\). A tertiary alcohol is formed by the reaction of a Grignard reagent with a ketone. For option B: \(C_6H_5 MgBr + CH_3 - CO - CH(CH_3)_2 \rightarrow C_6H_5 - C(OH)(CH_3) - CH(CH_3)_2\). (Correct) For option C:…

- Answer the question on the basis of passage given below:
Second period elements of p-Block differs from the rest of their group members due to their small atomic size, high electronegativity, high ionization enthalpy and absence of d-orbitals. The elements from the second period like C, N, O have unique property of forming \(p \pi-p \pi\) multiple bonds whereas other heavier elements of p-block form \(d \pi-p \pi\) multiple bonds. This changes the properties of second period elements to great extent. Also the single bond strength of the p-block elements with their own atoms gets affected by their atomic size and presence of lone pairs.
Inert pair effect also affects the properties of the p-Block elements especially for those elements which are present from 4th period onward and this happens due to poor screening effect of inner (n-1)d subshell electrons.

Sodium dichromate \(Na _2 Cr _2 O _7\) and Potassium dichromate \(K _2 Cr _2 O _7\) are strong oxidizing agents; in acidic solution, its oxidising action can be represented as follows :
\(Cr _2 O _7^{2-}+14 H ^{+}+6 e^{-} \rightarrow 2 Cr ^{3+}+7 H _2 O \left( E ^{\circ}=1.33 V\right)\)
The chromates and dichromates are interconvertible in aqueous solution depending upon pH of the solution.
The chromate ion is tetrahedral whereas the dichromate ion consists of two tetrahedra sharing one corner with \(Cr - O - Cr\) bond angle of \(126^{\circ}\)
Potassium permanganate is prepared by fusion of \(MnO _2\) with an alkali metal hydroxide and an oxidising agent like \(KNO _3\).
This produces the dark green \(K _2 MnO _4\) which disproportionates in a neutral or acidic solution to give permanganate. It is a strong oxidizing agent. Hydrogen ion concentration of the solution plays an important part in the reduction of permanganate to manganate, manganese dioxide and manganese(II) salt.
Potassium permanganate forms dark purple (almost black) crystals which are isostructural with those of \(KClO _4\).
The salt is not very soluble in water \((6.4 g / 100 g\) of water at 293 K ), but when heated it decomposes at 513 K.

Choose the correct answer from the options given below:CUET 2025 Medium - Read the passage carefully and answer the questions:
The degeneracy of the \(d\) orbitals has been removed due to ligand electron-metal electron repulsions in the octahedral comples to yield three orbitals of lower energy, \(t_{2 g}\) set and two orbitals of higher energy, \(e_g\) set. This splitting of the degenerate levels due to the presence of ligands in a definite geometry is termed as crystal field splitting and the energy separation is denoted by \(\Delta_0\). Thus energy of the two \(e_g\) orbitals will increase by \((3 / 5) \Delta_0\) and that of three \(t_{2 g}\) will decrease by \((2 / 5) \Delta_0\). The crystal field splitting \(\Delta_0\) depends upon the field produced by the ligand and charge on the metal ion. Some ligands are able to produce strong fields, in which case the splitting will be large, whereas others produce weak fields and consequently result in small splitting of \(d\) orbitals. Relative magnitude of crystal field splitting energy \(\Delta_{\circ}\) and pairing energy, \(P\) (energy required for electron pairing in a single orbital) determine the formation of low spin ( \(\Delta_0>P\) ) or high spin ( \(\Delta_0<P\) ) complex. In tetrahedral coordination entity formation, the \(d\)-orbital splitting is inverted and is smaller as compared to the octahedral field splitting. The crystal field theory attributes the colour of the complex to \(d-d\) transition of the electron. The colour of the coordination compounds depends on the crystal field splitting. In the absence of ligand, crystal field splitting does not occur and hence the substance is colourless.
