Answer the question on basis of passage given below:
Transition metals form a large number of complexes or coordination compounds in which the metal atoms are bound to a number of anions or neutral molecules. The valence bond theory explain the formation, magnetic behaviour and geometrical shapes while the crystal field theory explains the effect of different crystal fields on the degeneracy of d-orbitals energies of the central metal atom/ion. This provides for the quantitative estimation of orbital separation energies, magnetic moments and spectral and stability parameters.
- A \(\left[ Ni \left( H _2 O \right)_6\right]^{2+} \ -p^3 d^2\)
- B \(\left[ CoF _6\right]^{3-}-s p^3 d^2\)
- C \(\left[ Cu \left( NH _3\right)_4\right]^{2+} \ldots d s p^2\)
- D \(\left[ MnCl _4\right]^{2-} d s p^2\)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(B) \(\left[ CoF _6\right]^{3-}-s p^3 d^2\)
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
Co in \(\left[ CoF _6\right]^{3-}\) is \(+3\). \(Co^{3+}\) electronic configuration: \([Ar] 3d^6\). \(F^-\) is a weak field ligand, coordination number is 6. High spin octahedral complex, hybridization: \(sp^3d^2\).

- Answer the question on basis of passage given below :
Lyophobic sols like those of metals (Au, Ag, etc) are unstable and are easily precipitated by addition of electrolytes. However, it is observed that the addition of certain lyophilic colloids like gums, soaps, gelatine, etc. to lyophobic colloids (like a metal sol) render lyophobic colloids difficult to coagulate by the addition of electrolytes. The process is known as 'protection' and the lyophilic colloids are termed as Protective colloids. It is believed that the protective action of the lyophilic colloids is due to the covering up of the particles of the lyophobic colloid by those of the lyophilic colloid.
Evidently, smaller the gold number of a protective colloid, the greater is its protective action.

Adsorption is a surface phenomenon and it differs from absorption which occurs throughout the body of the substance that absorbs. In physiosorption the attractive forces are mainly van der Waal's forces while in chemisorption ionic/covalent bonds are formed between particles of adsorbent and adsorbate. The catalytic activity of finely divided iron in Haber's process of ammonia manufacture can be explained by adsorption theory. Adsorption being an exothermic process, the heat of adsorption is utilised in enhancing the rate of the reaction. Adsorption has many applications being used in gas masks, control of humidity, chromatograph separation, curing diseases etc.

- Read the following passage carefully and answer the given questions.
Plasmodium, a tiny protozoan is responsible for the disease malaria. Different species of Plasmodium (P. vivax, P. malaria and P. falciparum) are responsible for different types of malaria. Of these, malignant malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum is the most serious one and can even be fatal. Innate immunity consist of four types of barriers. These are – (i) Physical barriers- skin on our body is the main barrier which prevents entry of the micro-organisms. (ii) Physiological barriers- Acid in the stomach, saliva in the mouth, tears from eyes-all prevent microbial growth. (iii) Cellular barriers- Certain types of leukocytes (WBC) of our body like polymorpho-nuclear leukocytes (PMNL-neutrophils) and monocytes and natural killer (type of lymphocytes) in the blood as well as macrophages in tissues can phagocytose and destroy microbes. (iv) Cytokine barriers- virus-infected cells secrete proteins called interferons which protect non-infected cells from further viral infection. Allergy is due to the release of chemicals like histamine and serotonin from the mast cells. The use of drugs like anti-histamine, adrenalin and steroids quickly reduce the symptoms of allergy. Drugs like barbiturates, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, and other similar drugs, that are normally used as medicines to help patients cope with mental illnesses like depression and insomnia, are often abused.
