Answer the question on basis of passage given below:
Organic compounds containing carbon -oxygen double bonds ( \(C = O\) ) are called carbonyl compounds. These are highly polar molecules. Hence, their boiling points are higher than hydrocarbons and ethers. Aldehydes can be prepared from dehydrogenation or oxidation of alcohols and by reduction of acylhalides. Ketones are prepared by oxidation of secondary alcohols or by hydration of alkynes etc. Aldehydes and ketones undergo nucleophilic addition reaction with the number of nucleophiles such as HCN , NaHSO 3 ammonia derivatives. Carboxylic acids are prepared by the oxidation of primary alcohols, aldehydes and alkenes, by hydrolysis of nitriles. Carboxylic acids are more acidic than alcohols and phenols.
The correct sequence of reagents for the conversion of \(3\)-nitrobromobensene to \(3\)-nitrobensoic acid is:

  1. A \(Mg /\) ether, \(CO _2, H _3 O ^{+}\)
  2. B \(KCN , LiAlH _4, NaOH\)
  3. C \(KMnO _4 / OH ^{-}\), dil. \(H _2 SO _4, CO _2 / H ^{+}\)
  4. D \(AgNO _3\) (ammoniacal), \(CO _2, H _3 O ^{+}\)
Verified Solution

Answer & Solution

Correct Answer

(A) \(Mg /\) ether, \(CO _2, H _3 O ^{+}\)

Step-by-step Solution

Detailed explanation

\(3\)-nitrobromobenzene \(\xrightarrow{Mg / \text{ether}}\) \(3\)-nitrophenylmagnesium bromide \(3\)-nitrophenylmagnesium bromide \(\xrightarrow{CO_2}\) Magnesium \(3\)-nitrobenzoate Magnesium \(3\)-nitrobenzoate \(\xrightarrow{H_3O^+}\) \(3\)-nitrobenzoic acid
