Answer the question on basis of passage given below:
Organic compounds containing carbon -oxygen double bonds ( \(C = O\) ) are called carbonyl compounds. These are highly polar molecules. Hence, their boiling points are higher than hydrocarbons and ethers. Aldehydes can be prepared from dehydrogenation or oxidation of alcohols and by reduction of acylhalides. Ketones are prepared by oxidation of secondary alcohols or by hydration of alkynes etc.
Aldehydes and ketones undergo nucleophilic addition reaction with the number of nucleophiles such as HCN, NaHSO3 ammonia derivatives. Carboxylic acids are prepared by the oxidation of primary alcohols, aldehydes and alkenes, by hydrolysis of nitriles. Carboxylic acids are more acidic than alcohols and phenols.

  1. A \(C _6 H _5 COOH < C _6 H _5 CH _2 COOH < NO _2 CH _2 COOH < FCH _2 COOH\)
  2. B \(C _6 H _5 CH _2 COOH < C _6 H _5 COOH < NO _2 CH _2 COOH < FCH _2 COOH\)
  3. C \(C _6 H _5 CH _2 COOH < C _6 H _5 COOH < FCH _2 COOH < NO _2 CH _2 COOH\)
  4. D \(C _6 H _5 COOH < FCH _2 COOH < C _6 H _5 CH _2 COOH < NO _2 CH _2 COOH\)

Answer & Solution

Correct Answer

(C) \(C _6 H _5 CH _2 COOH < C _6 H _5 COOH < FCH _2 COOH < NO _2 CH _2 COOH\)

Step-by-step Solution

Detailed explanation

Order of increasing acidity is determined by the electron-withdrawing strength of the substituent groups: \(C_6H_5CH_2-\) is a weak electron-withdrawing group. \(C_6H_5-\) is an electron-withdrawing group via resonance and induction, stronger than \(C_6H_5CH_2-\). \(FCH_2-\) has…
