Adsorption is surface phenomenon and it differs from absorption which occurs throughout the body of the substance which absorbs. In physisorption the attractive forces are mainly van der Waal forces while in chemisorption actual bonding occurs between the particles of adsorbent and adsorbed more easily on the surface of a solid as compared to the gases which are liquified with difficulty. Adsorption increases with the increases in pressure and decreases as temperature is increased.According to adsorption theory of catalysis, the speed of the reaction increases because
- A Concentration of the reactant molecules at active centres of the catalyst become high due to adsorption.
- B In the process of adsorption, the activation energy of molecules become large.
- C Adsorption produces heat which increases the speed of the reaction.
- D Adsorption lower the activation energy of the reaction.

- Aldehydes and ketones undergo nucleophilic addition reactions. A nucleophile attacks the electrophilic carbon atom of polar carbonyl group from perpendicular to plane of \(sp^2\) hybridised orbitals of carbonyl carbon. The hybridisation of carbon changes from \(sp^2\) to \(sp^3\) and a tetrahedral alkoxide intermediate is formed. This captures \(H^+\) to give neutral product. In carboxylic acids, carbonyl carbon is less electrophilic than carbonyl carbon in aldehydes and ketones.

Heroin, commonly called smack is chemically diacetylmorphine which is a white, odourless, bitter crystalline compound. This is obtained by acetylation of morphine. Techniques like radiography (use of X-rays), CT (computed tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) are very useful to detect cancers of the internal organs.
