A coordination compound \(CrCl _3 \cdot 4 H _2 O\) precipitates silver chloride when treated with silver nitrate. The molar conductance of its solution corresponds to a total of two ions.
What is the formula of the compound?
- A \(\left[ Cr \left( H _2 O \right)_4\right] Cl _3\)
- B \(\left[ CrCl _3\right] \backslash\) cdot \(4 H _2 O\)
- C \(\left[ Cr \left( H _2 O \right)_3 Cl _3\right] \backslash \operatorname{cdot} H _2 O\)
- D \(\left[ Cr \left( H _2 O \right)_4 Cl _2\right] Cl\)
Answer & Solution
Correct Answer
(D) \(\left[ Cr \left( H _2 O \right)_4 Cl _2\right] Cl\)
Step-by-step Solution
Detailed explanation
\(Molar\ conductance\ corresponds\ to\ 2\ ions\ \Rightarrow\ 1\ complex\ cation\ +\ 1\ Cl^-\). \(Precipitates\ AgCl\ \Rightarrow\ 1\ Cl^-\ is\ outside\ the\ coordination\ sphere\). \(Total\ Cl\ atoms\ are\ 3\ (from\ CrCl_3).\ Since\ 1\ Cl\ is\ outside,\ 2\ Cl\ are\ inside\).\)…

Replacement of a hydrogen atom in a hydrocarbon by an alkoxy or carboxyl group yields a class of compounds known as ethers. Ethers are classified as symmetrical or unsymmetrical on the basis of groups attached to the oxygen atoms. Diethyl ether, a symmetrical ether, has been widely used as an inhalation anesthetic. Ethers can be prepared by acid catalyzed intermolecular dehydration of alcohols and Williamson's synthesis. Acid catalyzed dehydration of alcohols is not generally preferred as it gives a mixture of elimination and substitution products. In Williamson's synthesis, an alkyl halide is allowed to react with sodium alkoxide. Ethers containing substituted Alkyl groups may also be prepared by this method. The C-O bond in ether is weakly polar and is cleaved under drastic conditions with excess of hydrogen halides. In electrophilic substitution, the alkoxy group deactivates the aromatic ring and directs the incoming group to ortho and para positions.

In the formation of coordination complexes, if the inner \(d\) orbital \((n - 1)d\) is used in hybridisation, the complex, is called an inner orbital or low spin or spin paired complex. And if it uses outer \(d\) orbital \((nd)\) in hybridisation (like \(sp^3d^2\)), it is called outer orbital or high spin or spin free complex. The degeneracy of the \(d\) orbitals has been removed due to ligand electron-metal electron repulsions in the complex. This splitting of the degenerate levels due to the presence of ligands in a definite geometry is termed as crystal field splitting. For coordination complexes, the magnetic moment is determined by the number of unpaired electrons and is calculated by using the 'spin-only' formula, \(\mu = \sqrt{n(n+2)}\) where \(n\) is the number of unpaired electrons and \(\mu\) is the magnetic moment in units of Bohr magneton \((BM)\). The coordination compounds are of great importance. These compounds are widely present in the mineral, plant and animal worlds and are known to play many important functions in the area of analytical chemistry, metallurgy, biological systems, industry and medicine.
