Insulin used for diabetes was earlier extracted from slaughtered cattle and pigs. Insulin from an animal source, though caused some patients to develop allergy or other type of reactions. Insulin consists of two short polypeptide chains: chain A and chain B, that are linked bridges. In mammals, including human, insulin is synthesised as a pro-hormone.

Optically active polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones or molecules which provide such units on hydrolysis are called carbohydrates. They can be broadly classified as monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides depending on their behavior towards hydrolysis. They are also classified as reducing or non-reducing sugars. Another class of biomolecules is proteins which are polymers of twenty different amino acids linked by peptide bonds. Amino acids can be classified as acidic, basic or neutral depending on the relative number of amino and carboxyl groups in their molecule. The essential amino acids cannot be synthesized by our body and hence must be provided through diet. Nucleic acids are the polymers of nucleotides which in turn consist of a base, pentose sugar and phosphate. There are two types of nucleic acids namely, DNA and RNA which differ in the composition of sugar and a base
The side chain ( \(R\) group) present in the "Aspartic Acid" amino acid isCUET 2025 Hard - Benzene ring in phenol is expected to give the characteristic substitution or replacement reactions i.e. halogenation, nitration, sulphonation, alkylation etc. In these reactions, the attacking reagent is electrophile. The phenolic group activates the ortho and para positions in the ring due to conjugation. Disubstitution reactions are quite fast as the electron density in the ring has increased considerably. Phenols do not respond to nucleophilic substitution reactions as it is influenced by phenolic group.

In the year 1963 the two enzymes responsible for restricting the growth of bacteriophage in E. coli were isolated. The first restriction endonuclease - Hind II, whose functioning depended on a specific DNA nucleotide sequence was characterized five years later. It was found that Hind II always cut DNA molecules at a particular point by recognizing a specific sequence of six base pairs. This specific base sequence is known as the recognition sequence for Hind II. Besides Hind II, today we know more than 900 restriction enzymes that have been isolated from over 230 strains of bacteria, each of which recognize different recognition sequences.
