CUET · BIOLOGY · PYQ PAPER 2025
We use microbes and microbially derived products almost every day. Bacteria called lactic acid bacteria (LAB) grow in milk to convert it into curd. The dough, which is used to make bread, is fermented by yeast called Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Microbes are used to produce industrial products like lactic acid, acetic acid and alcohol, which are used in a variety of processes in the industry. However, certain bacteria, which grow anaerobically on cellulosic material, produce large amount of methane along with CO2 and H2. These bacteria are collectively called methanogens, and one such common bacterium is Methanobacterium. These bacteria are commonly found in the anaerobic sludge during sewage treatment. Microbes are also used for commercial and industrial production of certain chemicals like organic acids, alcohols and enzymes.
Examples of acid producers are Aspergillus niger (a fungus) of citric acid. You are familiar with the commonly used antibiotic Penicillin. Do you know that Penicillin was the first antibiotic to be discovered, and it was a chance discovery? Statins produced by the yeast Monascus purpureus have been commercialised as blood-cholesterol lowering agents. It acts by competitively inhibiting the enzyme responsible for synthesis of cholesterol.
Citric acid is commercially obtained by Aspergillus niger, which is a:
- A Bacterium
- B Fungus
- C Algae
- D Virus

- Read the following paragraph and answer the given questions.
Bio-fertilisers are organisms that enrich the nutrient quality of the soil like cyanobacteria, while there are organisms that help to control plant diseases and pests. The very familiar beetle, the ladybird and dragonflies are useful to get rid of aphids and mosquitoes, respectively. An example of microbial biocontrol agents that can be introduced to control butterfly caterpillars is certain bacteria, which are available in sachets in the form of dry spores. These spores are mixed with water and sprayed onto vulnerable plants. Trichoderma species that are very common in the root ecosystem, are very effective biocontrol agents of several plant pathogens.Baculoviruses attack insects and other arthropods. Usage of these viruses is desirable when an ecological sensitive area is being treated.

- Identify the correct statement about decomposition
(A) The rate of decomposition is quicker, if detritus is rich in nitrogen and sugar.
(B) Decomposition is largely an oxygen requiring process.
(C) The rate of decomposition is slow, if detritus is rich in chitin and lignin.
(D) The rate of decomposition is slow, if detritus is rich in nitrogen and sugar.
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:CUET 2023 Hard - Read the given passage and answer the following questions:
Secondary treatment or biological treatment: The primary effluent is passed into large tanks where air is pumped into it. This allows vigorous growth of aerobic microbes. While growing, these microbes consume the major part of the organic matter in the effluent. This significantly change the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) of the effluent. The effluent in then passed into a tank a small part of the sludge is pumped back into the aeration tank to serve as the inoculum. The remaining major part of the sludge is pumped into large tanks called sludge digesters. Here, other kinds of bacteria grow anaerobically in the sludge. The biogas produced can be used source of energy as it is inflammable. The effluent from the secondary treatment plant is generally released into natural water bodies like rivers and streams.
