CUET · BIOLOGY · PYQ PAPER 2023
Read the passage and answer the question : There are thousands of varieties of rice in India alone. The diversity of rice in India is one of the richest in the world. Basmati rice is distinct for its unique aroma and flavour and 27 documented varieties of Basmati are grown in India. There is reference to Basmati in ancient texts, folklore and poetry, as it has been grown for centuries. Several attempts have also been made to patent uses, products and processes based on Indian traditional herbal medicine, e.g. turmeric, neem. There has been growing realisation of the injustice, inadequate compensation and benefit sharing between developed and developing countries. The Indian Parliament has recently cleared a Bill that takes such issues into consideration, including patent terms emergency provisions and research and development initiative.
The bill cleared by Indian Parliament to check unauthorised exploitation of bioresources and traditional knowledge of bio-resources is
- A Bill of Patent Rights
- B Indian Patents Bill
- C Indian Biopiracy Bill
- D Bill of Traditional Knowledge of Bio-resources

Insulin consists of two short polypeptide chains- chain A and chain B, that are linked together by disulphide bridges. Some strains of Bacillus thuringiensis produce proteins that kill certain insects such as lepidopterans, coleopterans and dipterans. Bt toxin protein is converted into an active form of toxin due to the alkaline pH of the gut which solubilise the crystals. Transgenic animals that produce useful biological products can be created by the introduction of the portion of DNA (or genes) which codes for a particular product such as human protein (alpha-1-antitrypsin) used to treat emphysema. Plants, bacteria, fungi and animals whose genes have been altered by manipulation are called Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). GM plants have been useful in many ways. Genetic modification has: (i) made crops more tolerant to abiotic stresses. (ii) reduced reliance on chemical pesticides (pest-resistant crops). (iii) helped to reduce post harvest losses. (iv) increased efficiency of mineral usage by plants (this prevents early exhaustion of fertility of soil). (v) enhanced nutritional value of food.

Amines are considered to be derivatives of ammonia obtained by replacement of hydrogen atoms with alkyl or aryl groups. They are usually prepared from nitro compounds, halides, amides, imides etc. The presence of hydrogen bonding influences its physical properties. In alkylamines, a combination of electron releasing steric and hydrogen bonding factors influences the stability of substituted ammonium cations in protic polar solvents and thus affects the basic nature of amines. Alkyl amines are found to be stronger bases than ammonia which is more basic than water. Primary and secondary amines are engaged in intermolecular association due to hydrogen bonding. This intermolecular association is more in primary amines than in secondary amines. Tertiary amines do not have intermoleulcar association due to the absenceof hydrogen atom available for hydrogen bonding. Thus, the boiling point of amines depends on hydrogen bonding. In aromatic amines, electron releasing and withdrawing groups increase and decrease their basic character. Aryl diazonium salts usually obtained from arylamine undergo replacement of the diazonium group with a variety of nucleophile. Their coupling reaction of aryl diazonium salts with phenol or arylamine results in formation of dyes.
